Every trial we host is staffed by members. Stepping into a ring crew role is also the fastest way to learn how trials actually work.
Doggie Bytes are earned by volunteering during shows. They can be applied toward class fees and select show fees — up to 50% of a class fee can be paid in Doggie Bytes or Doggie Dollars.

Tell the gate steward or trial secretary that it's your first time. Every role is taught on the spot, and nobody expects you to already know it. Most people find that one day on ring crew teaches them more about trial procedure than a season of competing.
Most roles can be learned in a few minutes at the ring. Pick whichever suits you — there's no obligation to stick to one.
Operates the timing equipment, starting when the dog crosses the start line and stopping at the finish. Watching the dog rather than the handler is the whole skill.
Records the judge's calls on the scribe sheet — faults, refusals, eliminations and time. The judge's signals are learned quickly on the job.
Resets knocked bars between runs and keeps the ring moving.
Carries each handler's leash from the start line to the finish line.
Calls the running order and keeps competitors ready at ringside.
Enters scores and manages the flow of paperwork.
Most people hesitate over timing and scribing because they assume there's a lot to memorize. There isn't. The judge signals, you record; the dog crosses the line, you start the clock. Everything else you pick up in your first hour.
If you'd like a walkthrough before your first trial, ask the trial secretary — we have short training videos for the timer and scribe roles, and someone will always sit with you for the first few runs.
